Gait cycle posture corrective exercise are movements that reflect how we walk, run, and throw as human beings. This non-traditional approach to exercise trains the body to work in unison with proper tensions. It is designed to rehab/prehab injury, correct balance, improve coordination, increase power output, build lean muscle mass to your maximal genetic potential, and correct posture.
· The method of Functional Patterns has studied elite movers and designed exercises that directly reflect how those athletes move in space, ie reflecting our human gait cycle. Everything that moves has a gait cycle. Think about how a horse moves when it walks and runs, now compare that to a crocodile. These two animals move very different in comparison, so do human beings. The exercises within FP are designed to retention and strengthen patterns that make up how we move. · Fascia is the tissue that surrounds and connects every muscle group throughout our entire body. When the fascial system is healthy and free of restrictions we have great mobility comparable to our youthful years, before dysfunction and gravity has had an impact on us. When restrictions are present within the fascial tissue, it becomes thickened, immobile, painful, possibly leading to further injury. This thickening is a result of a combination of factors, poor posture, genetic postural dysfunction, and the force of gravity as a constant compression on our body. It is the body's way of providing additional support to combat the strain. This thickening increasingly limits mobility, causing further restrictions and worsens chronic pain in the given area over time.
· Myofascial release (MFR) techniques are an important key in regaining functionality and mobility. MFR is used to break up this thickened tissue, thus re-hydrating and releasing the area of tension. In 2014, I had a blood vessel rupture in my spinal cord under my brain stem leaving a 2.5 inch blood clot compressing my spinal cord. This caused acute paralysis within 30 minutes. I underwent emergency decompression surgery and had a lamenectomy from C2-C5 to remove the compression the blood clot was causing. Upon recovering from this surgery, with the help of physical therapy and a stubborn mindset, I regained a 100% function of my body again. I was grateful to be alive and mobile but I did not live a pain free existence. The combination of terrible posture, poor core engagement, the lack of bones in my neck, created a consuming type of pain that I was desperate to rid myself of. Functional Patterns utilizes various weighted clubs and tornado balls to strengthen the entire arm line and improve shoulder mobility. These are fantastic tools to utilize to improve shoulder dysfunctions that may be present. Learning the mechanics of these throws demonstrated starts at a very basic level that is dependent on shoulder and arm line health. Once strength and shoulder stability are established, progression of exercises are implemented for further strength and stability gains.
